28. Drilling rig, “SM4” type

Drilling rig, “SM4” type is an original type of drilling rig, designed by Polish constructors: Stanisław Szerauc and Mieczysław Mrazek. The „SM” symbol comes from first letters of the constructors’ surnames. The first drilling rigs, types SM1, SM2 and SM3, manufactured in the years 1930-1935, were mounted on wooden frameworks. The SM4 drilling rig, on a steel framework, was manufactured by Fabryka Maszyn „Glinik” Gorlice (a mining machinery manufacturer) and implemented for drilling operations in 1949. It is a mobile drilling rig, on a wheeled chassis for easy transport and handling at site. A complete drilling cage made of 3 rope drums, for drilling operations, a bailer („pipe-spoon”) cleaning and pipe handling, and a jerk device, were mounted on a common steel framework. This solution shortened the manufacture time of the drilling rig. The unit is intended for drilling boreholes to a depth of 800 m. The drilling rig has an adapter mast of the “Narada” type, two-pole, parallel, made of tubes.
